Alan used to fall asleep fast every night, but now he is constantly exhausted and it is becoming increasingly obvious that the problem is getting worse. Almost every morning he has noticed that he is more tired than when he first attempted sleep the night previous. If Alan does sleep it takes longer and longer each night and it isn’t quality sleep, not by a long shot. If anything Alan’s days and nights are blurring into one confusing day dream where he never quite falls asleep but he is a long way from alert and that is a very dangerous situation to be in.
Alan’s having a lot of trouble concentrating on even the most basic requirements, things he used to be able to do on autopilot are now requiring much greater effort, his attention span is essentially non-existent and the worst thing is his once excellent hand eye co-ordination is now very poor. He is constantly fumbling with his keys or spilling coffee. It’s easy to forget that Alan has a stress related issue that has caused this insomnia issue to begin with and now the manifestation of that stress is a bigger problem than he started with.
If this sounds like you then this article will spell out some of the real danger signs to look out for and what you can do to get back on track and essentially fall asleep fast again.
Why do you have Insomnia?
While Insomnia itself is very complicated to treat, the causes are surprisingly simple. Insomnia can be broken into two specific types, primary Insomnia or Secondary Insomnia.
Secondary Insomnia

Jet Lag is an obvious cause of Secondary Insomnia
As the name suggests secondary Insomnia is often the result of a secondary issue such as prescription drugs prescribed to treat cold or Influenza. The sleep deprivation is considered a side effect of the medication and often the issue resolves itself once the patient’s health has improved and the need to be taking the medication is gone. Secondary Insomnia can also be a result of Caffeine, Tobacco or recreational drugs and more obvious causes such as jet lag from long distance travel which disrupts the natural sleep pattern of the person suffering the Insomnia.
Primary Insomnia
Primary Insomnia however is almost always stress related. Stress can be a result of many different scenarios, including a health issue such as chronic pain caused by injury, career related pressures and issues concerning personal relationships. It’s important to consider everyone is fundamentally different with how stress is managed. Situations that can cause stress and anxiety in one person may have a completely different effect on another.
Conclusion
It is of course always best to treat the cause of a condition such as Insomnia rather than treat the symptoms and hope things turn around. Secondary Insomnia while easier to identify can sometimes be difficult to manage as the primary reasons for the Insomnia are sometimes unavoidable such as in the case of a required medication. The good news is Secondary Insomnia for most people is a temporary setback and can be overcome in time. Primary Insomnia however requires a deeper understanding of stress related issues effecting the sufferer.
